A group of us are reviewing several different ones to see what might be the mahzro fit for our community, as we are trying to find a replacement for the one we have been using. This mayzor, unfortunately, the first one voted against. It isn’t that it’s a bad book at all, it’s just that it was a bad fit for our community.
Hebrew has vowel markings. The script is pleasing to the eye and easy nahzor read. The This book was a consideration by the Machzor selection sub-committee of the Ritual Committee.
There are mostly gender neutral references where there can be. There are lots of explanations for the HHD only attendee. Two separate columns in Amidah for ‘Patriarchs only’ followers and for ‘Patriarchs and Matriarchs’ followers. Lots of great reflections and poetry in side columns. Complete readings included for the Torah and Haftorah portions.
Torah blessings are transliterated.
None of the reviewers cared for the red portions. They are both hard to read for anyone with any eye issues poor contrast and light red as opposed to bold dark redand we felt like they were distracting in a ‘red letter Gospel’ sort of way. While there is translation, there is very little transliteration.
This was especially a problem for Avinu Malkenu. Our congregation has the custom of all singing it together, however not everyone reads Hebrew. Transliteration in this portion is key.
The same for Un’taneh Tokef. Reflection readings were repetitive after a while and not particularly gender balanced.
Overall, a huge step up from the prior volume, but for this mixed Reform-Conservative-Orthodox congregation yes, we do existnot a good match. I really appreciate being able to choose whether I’m praying along with the group or going off on my own tangent at any moment in the services, and it’s also nice to use the far left column for alternative readings in the service.

I’m especially appreciative that there are prayers and passages for people in special circumstances–this year I couldn’t fast, and found it helpful to recite the prayer acknowledging that. There’s also mahzkr prayer in the Yizkor section for those mourning a difficult parent–not something I need, but I know people who have found that prayer speaks to them. The Mahzor helped me have a really deep dhalem engaged experience this holiday season, and I’m looking forward to it being a mainstay for many years to come.

Mahzor Lev Shalem: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by Edward Feld
I lead a family service, and spent real time with the mahzor throughout the High Holidays and for a few days after, reading translations and the comments on the side, making notes and adding flags for the future. There were almost too many inspirational anecdotes. I look forward to using this mahzor for many, many years.
